Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a major new technology that the whole world is buzzing about. Today, I want to share how I use AI, specifically ChatGPT, to help with my challenges. This powerful tool has been invaluable in dealing with some of the toughest thoughts and social interactions, helping me process not just the vast amount of information available online but also the complex dynamics of real-world interactions.
Imagine sitting at a bar, talking to a bartender. Bartenders are great listeners; they often help you find the answers you need as you drink and talk through your problems. Now, picture doing this without the alcohol and emotions clouding your judgment. For me, ChatGPT is that bartender. It's a tool that listens, processes information, and helps me find clarity and solutions without the fog of emotions.
Why the long face?
Use Case:
A while ago, I experienced a challenging situation that deeply affected me. I had been working diligently with a client on an important deal, coordinating with multiple teams to ensure the proposal was comprehensive and aligned with their needs. As the deadline approached, I intensified my efforts, pushing to get everything in order before the deadline. I pride myself on being professional and respectful, but I can be assertive to ensure progress.
After finally getting approval from a key decision-maker, I sent a thank-you email, expressing my appreciation for their efforts and partnership. To my surprise, the budget owner replied, expressing that he felt stressed by the process and perceived my approach as disrespectful and pushy. This feedback hit me hard. I couldn't immediately understand how my actions, always intended to be professional and assertive, had been interpreted negatively.
Emotional Impact
Receiving this feedback triggered a flood of emotions. I felt confused, stressed, and emotionally drained. It was a visceral reaction that left me questioning my approach and doubting my abilities. I pride myself on building strong, respectful relationships, so being seen as disrespectful was a tough pill to swallow. The overthinking started—what did I do wrong? In my search for a way to address this situation effectively, I turned to ChatGPT, my AI "bartender," designed to assist with problem-solving and decision-making. Here’s how this outlet helped me navigate my way out of the emotional maze:

Cognitive Restructuring: I used AI to help identify and challenge my negative thoughts. Here are a few examples:

Problem-Solving Skills: With ChatGPT’s assistance, I developed a structured plan to address the feedback. I created a clear, concise email to the client, balancing assertiveness with respect and seeking specific feedback to improve future interactions.
Socratic Questioning: AI guided me through questions that challenged my assumptions and helped me find a balanced perspective:
Question: "What evidence do I have that this feedback defines my entire professional worth?"
Answer: "I've received positive feedback from other clients and have a track record of successful projects."
Question: "What is the worst-case scenario, and how likely is it?"
Answer: "The worst-case scenario is losing the client, but it's unlikely if I address the concerns effectively and show commitment to improvement."
Question: "How can I turn this situation into a learning experience?"
Answer: "By understanding the client's perspective and improving my communication style, I can strengthen future interactions."
Gratitude Practice: Reflecting on positive aspects of my work and interactions helped improve my mood and reduce the emotional impact of the feedback. ChatGPT’s prompts for gratitude exercises were invaluable.
Regular Check-Ins: The AI suggested implementing regular check-ins with the client to maintain open communication and prevent future misunderstandings. This proactive approach helped rebuild trust and strengthen our partnership.
The AI helped me remove my emotions from the equation, allowing me to focus on practical solutions and effective communication strategies.
Using ChatGPT as an outlet, I was able to process and resolve challenging situations more efficiently. What initially took three days of emotional turmoil was significantly shortened by leveraging AI to build a clear plan forward. This experience underscored the value of having a reliable outlet to navigate life's and work's complexities.
